At 44, guardian Póvoa AC has watched many Olympic Games on television and remembers well the medals of Carlos Lopez (Los Angeles, 1984), Rosa Mota (Seoul, 1988) or the last canoeing success (London, 2012). But he never thought that national handball could win medals or even compete in an Olympic tournament.
“When I started playing, going to a big competition was already a very great feat, not to mention the Olympic Games … Even this dream never came true,” the goalkeeper suggests.
But today, with “such a great, such great quality” of the national team, Humberto Gomes believes that Portugal can even emulate its Olympic idols.
“One thing that Professor Paulo [Jorge Pereira, selecionador nacional] We were inspired to go out on the field always with great respect for the opponent, but to realize that we can beat any team. In this spirit, we go to the Olympic Games: we want to win every game. Of course, all of them cannot be won, but a medal is quite possible. This is another dream that we want to fulfill, ”he said.
If this happens, national handball players will enter a very limited area in Portugal.
“Several athletes received medals. [em Jogos Olímpicos] with great dignity. And this is unrealistic for such a small country and with fewer resources than in other countries. It says a lot about the athletes we have and the work that each of us does, ”he said.
Humberto Gomes is one of three goalkeepers present at the first stage of preparation for the Portuguese national team in Nazar. In the end, only two will join the group of 15, which will be chosen by Paulo Jorge Pereira of 20 athletes.
“Some people will be – of course – very sad, and I hope I am not one of them. Even because age is also of great importance, and for me this is really the last opportunity, “he recalls, promising” to do everything to become one of the chosen ones. ”
Central Rui Silva admits that starting a strenuous internship “hurts a little” after “a few good days off.” But, he stresses, “this is a good sign.”
“This is a sign that we will represent Portugal at the Olympic Games. (…) Only when we step there [em Tóquio] lies in the fact that we will fully feel the realization of a dream that we thought several years ago, I am not saying that it is impossible, but very difficult to achieve, ”he said.
Having won the right to participate in the Olympic tournament, the team strives to do more than just … be: “Knowing that we have achieved this goal is a sign that everything we did was done well and we want more,” he vowed, admitting that Portugal was leaving “without assuming much favoritism,” because in Tokyo they would be “the best in the world.”
While eager to make it to the Games, Rui Silva admitted that if he had a choice, he would “definitely not choose them” due to the restrictions imposed by the covid-19 pandemic.
“But due to the fact that we are present at the Olympic Games on an unprecedented basis, this issue remains on the sidelines. We’re still going to experience – and love – the entire experience of participating in the Games, ”he guaranteed.
