″The Portuguese Sea is only worth money if we save it″

Leaders of ocean research centers and innovation projects explain why technology is the key to sustainability.

“There is a study by the OECD a few years ago that calculated that the sea could bring 500 euros per hectare. This for the Portuguese Sea means about 200 billion euros per year. But it must be preserved, because only then is it worth it,” recalls Eduardo Silva from the INESC TEC Robotics Center.

“We have a fleet of autonomous vehicles, from aircraft to submarines, that collect and transmit data to a platform that allows analysis,” he simplified.

Technology can also be combined with existing knowledge, such as that of fishermen, to ensure sustainable development, added Sergio Leandro, director of the School of Tourism and Technology at the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria.

“We used existing technology for something else. We have installed GPS devices on 12 boats and donated smartwatches to 40 shellfish collectors in Peniche so they know where each of them is collecting shells so we can do our part to protect the resource.” he demonstrated.

In the former Akuinov, in Mir, now called Flatantic, this technology allows the production of 3200 tons of halibut per year, and investments are aimed at reaching 16.2 tons of halibut and flounder in the next 10 years.

CEO Renata Serradeiro recalled that the earlier project, which included an investment of 156 million euros by Pescanova, failed due to “some accidents along the way related to the release and capture of water.” With more than 250 million euros of investments boosted, Europe’s largest land-based aquaculture wants to “produce healthy and sustainable food”.

The “Sea, Door to the Future” conference takes place at the Matosinhos Cruise Terminal this Thursday morning as part of the celebrations for the 134th anniversary of the “Jornal de Notícias” at the Matosinhos Cruise Terminal.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.
