Since the war began more than six months ago, Russians have not had access to the most popular social networks in the West, such as Facebook and Instagram, or to news pages in the international press, such as the BBC. However, there is one platform that is resisting the Kremlin’s attempts to tell the story of the war in its own way: YouTube.

Since February 24, the day Russia invaded Ukraine, it has become harder for Russians to read information about the conflict in independent media that do not follow the Kremlin-created narrative about the denazization of Kyiv. Behind the Digital Iron Curtain in which Russian citizens live, there are significant gaps. YouTube represents one of these shortcomings, as it still allows the public to access images of the war or information from the non-state press.

Within a few months, some experts suggested that Russia might resist the possibility of blocking a video platform owned by Google, so as not to cause a reaction of the population or not even lead her to bypass the imposed rules through the VPN functiona tool that allows you to “disguise” the place where you access the Internet from and against which Moscow has been fighting for several years.

Russians need VPNs, but Moscow is blocking them. The West also cannot “go” to Russia
