IN Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 galloped down the lane of the Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis during the US Championship last weekend, raising the front wheels in the air to demonstrate the potential of electric drive.

The drag car is powered by a pair of Cascadia Motion twin electric motors that Ford Performance has tuned to deliver 1,502 horsepower to the rear slicks via a 3-speed gearbox.

Ford says it covered the quarter mile in 8.27 seconds at 168 mph in private tests and put NHRA Funny Car driver Bob Tusk III behind the wheel in Indianapolis to battle the 2018 Mustang Cobra with a supercharged V8 engine and supercharged. The plane is driven by Tony Pedregon. Ford has never released the official power output of the Cobra Jet’s V8 engine, but it is estimated to be in the 1,000bhp range.

Tuska had a slower reaction time and pulled out a high and long wheel rack the green light that allowed Pedregon to take the lead early and didn’t give up. The gas-powered Mustang overtook its electric counterpart from 8.797 seconds at 158.26 mph to 8.826 seconds at 156.81 mph.

That run really gave Ford the right to boast a battery-powered Chevy engine, whose 700-horsepower eCOPO Camaro hit a quarter-mile in 9.837 seconds at 134.07 mph last year.
