Volcano in the Canary Islands returns to expel lava and ash – Current Events

According to the Spanish news agency Efe, activity again became evident at 11:00 local time (the same time as in Lisbon), after the release of ash and smoke stopped at 08:30 after a night of constant explosions.

The Institute of Volcanology of the Canary Islands, Involcan, confirmed on Twitter that the main cone of the volcano is spewing lava again.

The Scientific Committee of the Canary Islands Volcanic Disaster Action Plan (Pevolca) is going to analyze what happened in the last hours around the La Palma volcano after seismographs recorded the sudden drop of the volcanic quake to the point where the signal “almost reached” disappeared “and smoke and ash stopped.

According to the European aerospace measuring system Copernicus, about 500 buildings were destroyed a week ago by lava, which covers more than 212 hectares, including many banana plantations.

Two previous eruptions on La Palma occurred in 1971 and 1949 and caused a total of three deaths, two of which were caused by gas inhalation.

The volcano Cumbre Vieja has been active and spewing lava since last Sunday, and despite this situation, 85,000 inhabitants of the island have not died or been injured, but the damage is huge, more than 400 million euros, according to regional authorities.
