Victory celebrations in France end with one dead, over 100 arrested

This Wednesday in Montpellier, a boy died after being hit by a car following a game between France and Morocco that qualified France for the 2022 FIFA World Cup final. Violations during the celebration also led to the arrest of at least 100 people.

A night that ended in tragedy. A 14-year-old boy died while celebrating the French victory over Morocco in Montpellier. According to a statement from the municipality of Herault, a boy of Moroccan descent was hit by a car and taken to hospital, but died after being treated. The car, according to the same note, has been found, but the suspect is on the run.

Footage of the incident circulating on social media shows a driver speeding over a group of Maghreb fans saw his French flag blown off the car.

After the triumph (2:0) of France over Morocco, which guaranteed the passage to the final of the French team, riots broke out not only in Paris, but also in cities such as Lyon or Bordeaux. So far, 115 people have been detained.

The French government announced on Tuesday that it was mobilizing 10,000 law enforcement officials, half of whom are in Paris, to oversee the World Cup semi-final celebrations. On Saturday, the day of Portugal and England’s elimination against Morocco and France respectively, there were incidents in Paris.
