The session, which was held virtually, resulted in retaliatory attacks by Palestinians and Israelis.

Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki accused Israel of “war crimes”, condemning the “aggression” of the Jewish state against “the Palestinian people and their holy places.”

“Hamas chose to escalate tensions used as a pretext for starting this war, which was deliberate,” Israel’s ambassador to the United States of America and the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, replied.

The Israeli diplomat asked the Security Council to condemn the “indiscriminate missile launch,” while the Palestinian minister called on the authorities to “take action” to prevent an Israeli offensive, asking how many Palestinians must be killed to be considered a “scandal.”

In parallel with the meeting, 15 members of the Security Council continued negotiations on a common text aimed at ending hostilities and confirming a solution for two states living side by side, namely Israel and Palestine, based on resolutions already adopted by the UN.

But the United States, in a position that many of its allies find incomprehensible, continues to backtrack on any joint statement, according to several diplomats heard by AFP.

In a week, Washington alone rejected two texts proposed by three Council members: Norway, Tunisia and China.
