Two Portuguese lessons to help clear up your doubts about the hyphen

Do you write “salary” or “salary”? What standard do you use when writing?

Although the hyphenation cases cause a lot of doubts among the writer, there is a rule: with ambiguous prefixes. Why are the words “driving school” and “semi-new” written without a hyphen, while “auto hypnotic” and “half board” use the blessing sign?

In the case of prefixes that can be changed, the space will never be used. Forget about semi-new, super food, super promotion.

With disyllable prefixes (repeat!) There are only two options: use or not use a hyphen!

Remember the following: this character will only be used if the last letter of the prefix is identical to the first letter of the stem, or if the stem begins with the letter H.

Therefore, words such as “anti-inflammatory”, “antihypnotic”, “rear admiral”, “intra-arterial”, “intrahepatic”, “superman” are written with a hyphen.

On the other hand, “anti-abortion”, “driving school”, “self-portrait”, “counterload”, “half new”, “super food”, “super promotion” are examples of terms. derivative with a prefix – officially registered as such.

For all these reasons, the word salary is spelled without a hyphen.

Another:

In the Code of Ethics for the Offline Address Book:

Article 6. A lawyer is prohibited from revealing facts in court, deliberately falsifying the truth or relying on bad faith.

Why is there a hyphen in the words “bad faith”? Simply because it is not an evil “faith”, that is, “bad faith”, but an intention to cause deception or distort the truth.

When forming compound nouns (not associated with a prefix), the hyphen serves an essential function: it is enough to think about the difference between a black box and a black box (a recorder on an airplane).

The Portuguese language is very rich. Appreciate this meticulous spelling process and you will receive a wonderful letter!
