The owner of TVI announced today that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with CNN under a licensing agreement that will create CNN Portugal.

“We have been working on this project for several months now, we definitely intend to air in the last quarter of this year,” Mario Ferreira said in Jornal das 8 TVI.

Media Capital’s chairman of the board added that it depends on the ERC’s authorization to “rebrand” TVI24, as it is “important” as “it is part of the contract with CNN.”

Only after this permission will we work 100% on the transition, which we hope will start soon and that we can provide an opportunity – because we cannot make the channel 24 hours without other means – for new contributors who can join and that some until (…) they reveal their talents, ”the businessman said.

The agreement with CNN “originally meant a ‘rebranding’ of the TVI24 news channel, but in fact there is no channel in Portugal at the moment that would actually broadcast news 24 hours a day,” continued Mario Ferreira. who was elected president of Media Capital on November 24 last year.

“It means a name change, a paradigm shift in terms of the work that will be done here in terms of design, image, which has actually been done since the beginning of the year and since the arrival of Anselmo Crespo. [diretor de informação] and this new set of shareholders, as well as a significant improvement in the channel, ”he stressed.

This agreement reflects “also a search on the part of this dynamic, somewhat ambitious and demanding group of shareholders who would like to see a channel and news brand in the country that goes beyond what is already the journalistic quality we have in the world today. Channel TVI24 “.

Mario Ferreira stressed that CNN “appreciated the quality of the work done, the journalistic quality and human resources” of Media Capital.

“Last week, the ERC was duly informed by our lawyers about what will happen and about the negotiations that will be in question, since Media Capital is a listed company, this is an appropriate act, it had to be kept relatively secret to a limited group people, ”he added.

The agreement “now reinforces our values, it also brings appreciation not only to Media Capital, but also to Portugal and the professionals who work here, because here we will have an open window to the world too, we will have constant access to the CNN database.

“We want to send a signal that we want to build trust, improve quality, we want to strengthen independence, we want to strengthen the image that we want to embrace Portugal, we want to create a television that, although it has a strong global brand, we can create for the Portuguese the possibility that if there is a disaster at night, turn on the TV or go to CNN Portugal, because you know we will have someone there, ”he added.

Mario Ferreira said there will be “investments” made, but this has not resulted in an increase in value.

The announcement of this agreement with CNN comes exactly six months after Mario Ferreira was elected chairman of the board of directors of Media Capital, and a year later (May 14, 2020) he joined the owner of TVI when he bought a 30.22% stake in the company. Company.
