Chega’s leader said at the beginning of the evening that “today is a new day” for the party and the “national political panorama”, reaffirming the goal of being the third-largest force in the number of votes.

In Braga, upon arriving in Sameiro, where he will spend election night, André Ventura declined to name specific targets, explaining this by “legal restrictions” as polls only close at 8 pm, but he was confident that Chega’s result would be tonight.

“Regardless of the results, I think that today is a new day for Chega and a new day for the national political panorama,” he said.

André Ventura stated that he had “only one prepared speech”, noting that the goals set during the campaign are being preserved: I hope that we are moving towards today and that I hope that the party will reach today, ”he said.

When asked about the choice of Braga to monitor the election results, the Chega leader said that this is “a sign of decentralization.”

“It is important to start with the fact that a political country is not only Lisbon, it is also Braga, it is also Porto, Faro, Funchal. I think this is a good practice that the parties should implement so that the rest of the country realizes that it has a very strong political influence, ”he said.

Today, more than 9.3 million voters (9,323,688 registered citizens) are registered for election in the municipal authorities of 308 municipalities in Portugal.

The mayors of the city council and the municipal assembly of the country’s 308 municipalities and 3091 mayors and the head of the parish councils will be elected (on the island of Corvo, in the Azores, the municipality with the lowest number of voters, the municipal executive also carries out the powers entrusted to the parish).

Polling stations will be open until 20:00.
