The law, which favored sons over women, was repealed in 2011 but applies to anyone born before that year.

The line of succession is very long. For example, the current king of Spain, Felipe VI, was 567th by blood in a list compiled in 2011, but could not accept the crown because he is a Catholic (English kings are the heads of the Anglican Church, created after a split with the Vatican).

See below for the first members of the line of succession, which changed with Charles’ accession to the throne.

1. Prince William, Duke of Cambridge (firstborn of Charles and Diana, grandson of the Queen, born 1982)

2. Prince George of Cambridge (firstborn of William and Catherine, great-grandson of the Queen, born 2013)

3. Princess Charlotte of Cambridge (daughter of William and Catherine, born May 2015)

4. Prince Louis of Cambridge (son of William and Catherine, great-grandson of the Queen, born 2018)

5. Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex (son of Charles and Diana, grandson of the Queen and brother of William, born 1984)

6. Archie, son of Harry and Meghan (born May 6, 2019)

7. Lilibet Diana, daughter of Harry and Meghan (born June 4, 2021 in the USA)

8. Prince Andrew, Duke of York (the Queen’s second son, born 1960)

9. Beatrice of York (daughter of André and Sarah, granddaughter of the Queen, born 1988)
