Tens of thousands of people in Scotland and the north of England were left without electricity this Sunday due to hail and freezing temperatures.

The ice blasts caused power outages around the Scottish-English border, with Northern Powergrid reporting 1,100 incidents that required significant repairs.

The company said it was still trying to restore service to 40,000 customers, while SP Energy Networks said 21,000 customers were out of service this Sunday.

“Despite all the preparations, Arwen’s storm resulted in massive and intense damage unprecedented in 15 years“said Rod Gardner, lead incident manager at Northern Powergrid.

The power outage came when meteorologists warned of freezing temperatures and said the coldest night of the season would hit parts of the UK on Sunday when it snows across the country, and parts of the UK, Scotland and Northern England will drop to minus 10 degrees.

Several train routes, including those between Edinburgh and Newcastle, were canceled due to the hurricane.

At least three people died when they were knocked down by trees blown by high winds during storm Arwen, which hit the UK on Friday.
