The cost of a basket of basic foodstuffs for the last week – from 6 to 13 July – fell by 0.97% (2 euros) to 204.79 euros. However, since February 23, on the eve of the outbreak of the armed conflict in Ukraine, the same basket has already risen in price by 11.53%, that is, by 21.16 euros.

As conclusions from DECO Protest which since February 23, every Wednesday, based on the prices collected the day before, has been tracking the prices of a basket of 63 staples, which includes goods such as turkey, chicken, hake, horse mackerel, onions, potatoes, carrots, bananas, apples, oranges, rice, spaghetti, sugar, ham, milk, cheese and butter.

In the reviewed week, double-digit price increases were recorded for some products: between 6 and 13 July, the ten products with the highest price increase were strawberry liquid yogurt (17%), horse mackerel (14%), honey flakes (10%), Frankfurt sausages ( 8%), tuna in vegetable oil (8%), maria biscuits (7%), crustless bread loaf (7%), tomato pulp (6%), extra virgin olive oil (5%) and black swordfish ( four%).

Looking exclusively at the product categories with the largest price increases between February 23 and July 6, fish and meat stand out the most, with increases of 17.39% and 13.2% respectively. The top 10 foods with the highest price increases in the past five months (February 23 to July 13) are Fresh Hake (51%), Salmon (45%), 100% Cooking Oil (37%), Whole Chicken (31%), strawberry liquid yogurt (28%), cake flour (25%), Maria cookies (24%), pork chop (20%), turkey steak (20%) and Carolino rice (19%).

The problem is historical: Portugal is heavily dependent on foreign markets to guarantee the supply of cereals needed for domestic consumption. Currently, they account for only 3.5% of national agricultural production – mainly corn (56%), wheat (19%) and rice (16%). And if in the early 90s self-sufficiency in grain was about 50%, then at present the value does not exceed 19.4%, which is one of the lowest rates in the world and forces the country to import about 80% of the consumed cereals. consume.
