Rhys Hoskins, Jay Bruce and Jean Segura secured the attack, while Spencer Howard earned his first Major League win when the Phillies leveled 8-6 over the Washington Nationals at Citizens Bank Park on Monday night.
The win, won after losing to Atlanta on Sunday night, was the Phillies’ sixth in their last seven games.
Fils 15-15, 30 games sprint season. They are still on track to reach Bryce Harper’s goal of nine wins in 10 games. He officially stated that this is what the team needs to make a difference after Fils lost their fifth straight game on August 22 in Atlanta.
This season, the Phillies will play 3-0 against the reigning World Series champion. There are three more games to play this week.
Washington is 12-20 years old.
Howard’s Night
The rookie right-hander didn’t have any negative consequences from being fired for 11 days. His first four outs were outs. He went five innings and gave up five hits and two runs. The runs began in the fifth inning when Howard gave up a single from Trea Turner and one homer to Juan Soto, who hit two in the game.
Romero shines
Rookie Jojo Romero did a great job maintaining a 6-2 lead after Howard left. Romero has four outs, two outs. Since joining the club, he’s had 6 strikeouts and one walk in three free innings. He throws the ball with confidence.
Fils will have to make room on the 28-man roster to add David Phelps on Tuesday. It would have been easy to give up Romero to make room for the squad, but he’s shooting so well that the Phillies may have to consider another decision.
Hunter on a roll
Tommy Hunter received four major outs, including three in the eighth, to defend the lead. Two outs from the eighth came runners on the second and third.
In his last eight games, Hunter has given up one try in 9 innings. He only passed one and struck out eight in that span.
This is cause for concern.
Hot bats
Hoskins and Segura relaxed a bit as Harper and JT Realmuto cooled off a bit.
Hoskins scored a solo homer in the first inning and a double run in the seventh. He has played three games in a row and four of the last five. He has eight RBIs in his last three games.
Segura had a three-shot in the fourth, giving him eight RBIs in his last six games.
Bruce left Illinois with a second-half Homer.
Power show
The Phillies hit 41 homers in August. It was only the 14th time in club history that they reached 40 homers in one month.
Phillies’ best three months for homers:
46 – September 2019
44 – June 2004
43 – August 2009
Remake bullpen
Most of the original lineup has disappeared. More attentively…
Despite this …
Heath Hembree and Brandon Workman, two new additions to the bullpen, have together abandoned three Homers to make the game closer than it should have been.
