With the COVID-19 pandemic and the growing demand for telecommunications services, the telecommunications sector could be expected to grow in terms of human resources! However, the scenario is different.

In five years, the number of employees in the telecommunications industry has decreased by 3914 people. What is missing?

Telecom Workers: Only from 2019 to 2020 there was a break in 1902.

According to JN, the telecommunications industry has never had so few workers, according to the report “The Market for Communications in the National Economy (2016-2020)” prepared by Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações (Anacom) in mid-December.

An official source from Anacom confirms to JN / DV that the decline in human resources (including business support functions such as financial and administrative aspects) has resulted in the “lowest ever” workforce in the sector.

In five years, the number of employees in the telecommunications sector has decreased by 3914 people. From 2019 to 2020 alone, there was a drop in 1902, that is, in one year the sector lost almost half of the workers it lost in five.

After contacting the operators Altice, NOS, Vodafone and the operator association, Apritel only answered Altice. For the company, the responsibility lies with the regulator. According to what is indicated ...

An unfavorable and hostile regulatory environment created by the regulator - Anacom - is destroying market value. This scenario of instability and lack of predictability in regulation inevitably leads to reduced investment by operators and, as a result, creates conditions for job cuts.

The ANACOM report says that the decline in the number of employees in the telecommunications sector is due "mainly to a sharp decline in the number of employees in one of the largest providers in the electronic communications market." In addition, “another of the most important providers in the sector” also recorded “a significant reduction in the number of its employees”.

With the start of the new year and new challenges, especially at the 5G level, the scenario may change. In the meantime, these are numbers for thought.
