The news reached our editorial office through a statement that the Lidl Group is announcing its expansion into the Autonomous Region of Madeira with the goal of opening three stores by 2023. This is not the first announcement in this regard, although it is now emerging more accurately and even with an appropriate timeline and amounts involved.

With a consolidated presence in Portugal, from north to south, with a network of 265 stores, the retailer is currently expanding into the Autonomous Region of Madeira, investing € 100 million in its first three stores. scheduled for 2023.

150 jobs in the region

Lidl Portugal’s entry into the region also aims to stimulate the local economy, not only by partnering with local suppliers, but recruiting as well, as announced. In this sense, around 150 new jobs will be created in 2023 through purchases from Madeira, commercial suppliers and service providers worth around € 20 million.

Sustainability remains one of the retailer’s top priorities, and as it expands to Madeira, its stores will be equipped with photovoltaic panels as well as multi-standard and electric fast charging stations that make this possible. The battery is charged to 80% in just 30 minutes, allowing you to refuel during your regular shopping trip. Your fleet will also be 100% electric.

265 stores from north to south

Lidl Portugal contributed € 2.120 million in wealth creation in 2018, according to an impact study conducted by the independent consulting company KPMG, which is 1% of national GDP.
