The Regional Office of the Medical Association Center (SRCOM) underlines the remarkable contribution of the development nongovernmental organization Health in Portuguese, which, among other things, is responsible for the Reception and Protection Center for Victims of Trafficking in Human Beings. Beings (one of the 5 centers in the country for responding to victims of human trafficking). The Coimbra-based NGO is currently headed by family physician Enrique Correia.

“It is worth highlighting the work of those who provide support to those most in need, whether in terms of humanitarian aid, emergency assistance and assistance to at-risk and vulnerable people. This is a real exercise in promoting and protecting human rights, ”says the President of SRCOM, knowing in detail all the projects that are underway and are being prepared by“ Saúde em Português ”.

On International Human Rights Day, which is celebrated today to mark the date of the 1948 adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations General Assembly, Carlos Cortez commends the network of support created by Saúde em Português, namely: helping to promote and provide health care for the vulnerable and people at risk.

As part of the Human Rights Week program organized by SRCOM and under the motto Medicine and Human Rights, the Regional Office of the Medical Association Center visited this nongovernmental development organization, which according to the Vice President, Dr. Umberto Vitorino, will soon return with projects in the field health care in Angola and Guinea-Bissau.

Currently in Portugal, one of the ongoing human trafficking awareness projects called “Goods for People 4” will have a special focus early next year with a campaign to raise awareness of human trafficking in football. It should be recalled that, according to the Annual Internal Security Report 2020 (RASI 2020), there were 229 alleged victims of trafficking in Portugal, 155 of whom were related to labor exploitation. Also according to RASI 2020, of the 229 alleged victims, 29 were under the age of 18. This is a transnational crime and trafficking in persons within the country can take place.

“The Medical Association will promote the protection of the rights of risk groups, be they women, children, young people or the elderly. In this institutional exchange, we will also contribute to the realization of the right to health for all, one of the basic conditions of human rights, ”concludes Carlos Cortes.
