According to a statement by the Ukrainian security forces, more than 10 shots were fired at the car in the village of Lisniki, Kiev region.

According to police, Zelensky’s senior aide Sergei Shefir was not injured in the attack.

The driver was “seriously injured,” according to a Facebook post by Ukrainian Interior Minister Anton Gerashchenko, which indicated that the shots were fired from automatic weapons from a section of the forest.

The presidential office links the attack to Zelenskiy’s policy against the “oligarchs.”

The Ukrainian government has prepared a bill that, among other things, creates a special register of oligarchs who will be prohibited from funding parties and buying state-owned companies in major privatization processes.

“We certainly associate this attack with an aggressive and even military campaign against the active policy of the head of state,” Mikhail Podolyak, adviser to the head of the presidential administration, told the Ukrainian newspaper Vesti.

It is “a policy aimed at significantly reducing the traditional influence of shadow oligarchs in social processes, as well as eliminating political and financial groups that openly work for our foreign opponents,” he said.

President Zelensky is currently in New York to attend the UN General Assembly.
