The National Civil Aviation Flight Personnel Union (SNPVAC) has nominated economist Ricardo Paes Mamede as the workers’ representative on the airline’s board of directors.

In a statement, the union stressed that following the presentation of the initiative on May 20 by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing, organizations representing TAP workers began negotiations to assess the feasibility of providing an agreed name.

“It is important for SNPVAC that this spokesperson is someone with a high public reputation and that he is a guarantee of protecting the interests of workers,” he argues in the same post, where he says that “unanimity is impossible.”

However, he adds, “the chosen person brings together the consensus of SNPVAC, SITAVA (Air and Airport Workers’ Union) and other unions.”

Ricardo Paes Mamede holds a PhD in Economics and is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Economics at ISCTE, singling out a union that “has an extensive academic program in economics and has always taken on the protection of state-owned companies and their employees. “.

Since 2017, he has also been a member of the Economic and Social Council and, as SNPVAC emphasizes, “from the very beginning of the restructuring process, publicly demonstrating a position to defend the strategic importance of TAP for the national economy”.

For the union structure, having a representative on the airline’s board of directors “represents an unprecedented opportunity in TAP history,” adding confidence that “this initiative could represent a new stage in management recognition of workers.”

For this reason, SNPVAC considers it “vital that flight attendants and other working groups participate in this election,” which will be voted on on June 3 on the intranet, and each employee has one vote.
