Attending a ceremony marking the tenth anniversary of Fernando Gomes’ leadership at the Portuguese Football Federation, UEFA President Alexandre Čeferin stressed in Cidadi do Futebol on Tuesday that they are united by friendship and complicity.
“The fact that he was with me at UEFA as vice president is undeniably valuable. We can always count on him; he is calm and thoughtful, but at the same time firm and determined, ”he said in his speech, in which he also thanked Portugal for helping UEFA to host covid-19 competitions. Lisbon hosted an unprecedented Champions League final back in 2020, and then this year, Porto hosted the Champions League final between Chelsea and Manchester City, also at a tough time of the pandemic. “They took my word for it in difficult times, and we went down in history together with the Portuguese government, because we trusted each other,” he stressed. “Even the covid-19 crisis did not stop Portugal,” he said earlier, immediately after his opening speech.
Čeferin also recalled the support he always received from Fernando Gomes. “He supported me from the first moment when I decided to run for the UEFA leader, and believe me, few of them did. It was courageous to support someone from Slovenia in that race, ”he said, submitting to the qualities of the leader of the federation. … “It is no coincidence that so many successes occurred in Portuguese football during the presidency of Fernando Gomes. He is a born leader, ”he praised.
