New research published in the journal BMJ Nutrition, Prevention and Health shows that consumers who follow a vegetarian or vegan diet are less likely to suffer from serious illnesses caused by the new coronavirus. In addition, people who consider fish to be their main source of protein are less likely to become seriously ill with Covid-19.

On the other hand, meat consumers are more likely to experience severe symptoms, according to a study cited by the British newspaper The Independent. An analysis based on data provided by citizens from six countries shows that vegetarians are 73% less likely to become seriously ill, and fish lovers are 59% less likely than meat consumers.

A total of 2,300 people were interviewed, not infected, and 568 infected. Among those already infected with the virus, 138 reported moderate to severe symptoms, and 430 said they only had moderate or mild symptoms.

The same respondents were asked to consider the diet they followed the year before the pandemic – for example, whether it was plant-based, keto, paleo, or low-carb. Of the 568 citizens who reported Covid-19, only 41 ate a plant-based diet.

“In all six countries, a plant or fish-based diet is associated with lower chances of moderate to severe Covid-19 (…). This diet can be seen as protection against severe Covid-19, ”the study authors point out.

However, it should be borne in mind that research alone is not enough to confirm a direct link between diet and how the new coronavirus affects everyone. Gunther Kunle, a professor at the University of Reading, notes that since the beginning of the pandemic, there has been a lot of speculation about the impact of food.

“This study tries to answer this question, but there are a number of limitations that need to be considered,” says the expert, who is cited by the Independent. One of the most notable aspects is the fact that the research is based on responses from people themselves, who may not have the most accurate idea of what they actually eat.
