Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has announced the creation of a monthly allowance of 250 euros for young people between the ages of 18 and 35 with an income of less than 23,725 euros per year to facilitate the departure of their parents from home and emancipation.

This was announced at the opening ceremony of the 1st Spanish City Forum. According to the EFE agency, the benefit will be valid for the next two years and, in the case of the most vulnerable families, it can be supplemented by rental assistance up to 40% of the cost.

The Spanish Prime Minister argues that a just economic recovery implies easier access to housing and that the age of emancipation in the country should reach the European average of 26 years.

“We are going to develop a public policy to reduce the age of emancipation, which is unbearably high in our country, so that young people can get access to decent rental housing with the support and assistance of the General Directorate,” Sanchez said.

According to the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia, 6.820 million euros will be allocated for the housing rehabilitation plan and the urban rebuilding program. The government wants to carry out more than half a million rehabilitation measures over the next few years, which is the equivalent of 40,000 homes over the next six years.

€ 400 cultural pass

Housing subsidies weren’t the only ones announced on Wednesday. According to El Mundo, the Spanish government has also announced that all young people will receive a cultural allowance of 400 euros when they reach the age of majority.

“We are going to give them 400 euros for the purchase of books, the consumption of any kind of artistic or stage activity,” the Prime Minister promised. “We must support a very important industry for our country, such as chemistry or shipbuilding, all professions related to cinema are important. There will be a cultural bonus for youth in the budgets ”.

According to the National Statistical Institute, 470,699 Spaniards turned 18 in 2020. Thus, the total cost of the cultural subsidy will amount to 235 million euros for the state. In the last General State Budget, the total investment in culture and sports amounted to 1,148 million euros.

The cultural allowance is similar to a check for 300 euros, which France launched this spring for 800,000 18-year-olds as part of the economic recovery program. French teens between 14 and 18 also receive € 25 a year to enjoy the culture. V Italy, there are similar measures to promote cultural consumption.
