Someone stubborn but smart put Google Maps on Nintendinho

I’m 2012, oh Google “Launched” the 8-bit version Cards as one of the annual April Fools’ jokes of the time. The service for finding and viewing maps and satellite images of the Earth in low resolution was just a joke, but the company even promised – and did not – that it would release a cartridge with “the game”, So that the platform rotates on Nintendo Entertainment System (NES or “Nintendinho”)… Nine years later, someone figured out how to do it.

With the help of a heavily modified console and previous work of other youtuber hackers “ciciplusplus ” used the method of building maps in retro style. On the hardware side, he used the guide to create a special cartridge for Nintendinho made by another influencer. “TheRasteri, ”In order to create a server-hosted Raspberry Pi installation for the mod.

As for the software, Cyclusplus found one old blog – coincidentally from 2012 – which used aerial imagery from Bing Maps (a system similar to Google Earth) to convert views to graphical quality similar to The Legend of Zelda (1986). To get a better understanding of the process, watch the video below:

The result is an “old fashioned” version of Google Maps with a rough map of the world, built in 8-bit format, that looks accurate. The service can be accessed and managed through joystick, and details such as menus, city markers, etc. are displayed in retro style.

In Nintendinho, you can vaguely discern the shapes of continents and coastal areas, but once the player gets close, it is impossible to estimate any location due to the lack of detail and the unreliability of the 8-bit style. However, this is an impressive and fun trick – we believe that Google did not even think that someone would come up.

Is this a sane way to get directions from one place to another? Probably not, but who knows what the future holds. If anyone has actually managed to get all the Google Maps to run inside a Nintendinho cartridge, then “anything is possible.”
