Soldiers of the Portuguese Army received the 2nd Prize for Innovation in the Armed Forces!

The military units of the Portuguese Army Biological and Chemical Defense Laboratory, Lieutenant Colonel Julio Carvalho, Major Wilson Antunes and Major Thiago Gonçalves have been awarded the 2nd Military Innovation Award in 2022.

Information provided on the official page of the Portuguese Army, this annual award is intended to recognize ideas that can contribute to the development or improvement of existing capabilities, with a view to their future use in military operations or civil emergency support operations. . This year the award was dedicated to “Autonomous Systems”.

The award-winning idea was based on the development of an unmanned aerial system for chemical and radiological recognition and detection with certification for explosive atmospheres in accordance with ATEX regulations (Explosives), within the framework of the GammaEx project, carried out within the framework of the Center for Research, Development and Innovation of the Military Academy.

The awards ceremony was hosted by the Hydrographic Institute in Lisbon and was accompanied by the opening of the 1st NATO Center of Excellence in Portugal for Geospatial, Meteorological and Oceanographic Information (NATO Marine Geospatial, Meteorological and Oceanographic Center of Excellence – MGEOMETOC COE), the ceremony was chaired by the Minister of National Defense, Professor Elena Carreiras.
