A section of Paso Robles, California, came under command of protection in place on Thursday after reports of gunfire being carried out in the hunt for a gunman who shot a representative and killed another person.

The suspect, identified by police as 26-year-old Mason James Lira, is suspected of firing at a police station in central California at around 3:45 am, according to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office.

He was accused of shooting Deputy Nicholas Dreyfus, 28, in the face, leaving seriously injured MPs before fleeing the scene. The deputies then found a local man shot dead at the Paso Robles train station.

As they searched for Lira, the sheriff’s office on Thursday implemented a shelter mandate on the spot for a distance of two miles from the city after new reports of shots fired not far from the police station.

The sheriff’s office warns that the Lira, which they describe as “temporary” from Monterey, are considered armed and dangerous.
