The week was turbulent in the political arena. Between Monday and Tuesday (5), the focus in Brasilia was on the PEC print vote that was cast. Also on Tuesday, the Navy staged a military parade with tanks around the Planalto Palace, which was criticized by lawmakers.

A special parliamentary commission analyzed a proposed constitutional amendment promoting a mini reform of electoral rules. The so-called “area” was rejected. The return of party coalitions to proportional elections was approved.

Yesterday (12) the Supreme Court (STF) authorized the initiation of an investigation against President Jair Bolsonaro in order to investigate the leak of information about a secret investigation by the Federal Police (PF). In addition, the week was marked by increased tensions between the three powers and a large number of CPI sessions on the pandemic.

On the other hand, the government announced a new social program to replace the Bolsa Família, as well as a vote on income tax reform, postponed until next week.

Political scientist Carlos Valente notes that the week was “full of stories”, but in practice it did not have “the novelty that people feel in their daily life.” According to him, “the fact that the chamber does not vote on issues of interest to the population is nothing new” – with regard to PECs by printed votes.

“Even a military parade, which was criticized by many people, takes place every year, but no one knew about it,” said Valente. “For an ordinary citizen, it was a week like any other,” he confirmed.

The specialist highlighted the role of agribusiness in Brazil’s trade balance. “These people work from sunrise to sunset, they have no time to engage in political gossip,” he commented. “They create wealth, jobs and make the country work. In fact, this is the main thing, ”he said.

“Brazil will remain the same with the CPI for the pandemic. We have a House that has forgotten about the population – the politicians we have chosen – so we will have a president who will fight a number of tricks, we will continue to discuss whether the voting results will still be published or not, and so on. ” , – analyzed Valente.

The specialist expects a “big move” on September 7 in Brasilia. “Agribusiness will provide support and food for these thousands of people, and they will not leave until we address some central issues,” he predicted.

“I think September 7 will be a watershed moment for Brazil,” he said.
