SEAT plants in Martorell (Barcelona) and Volkswagen Autoeuropa in Palmela will be connected by rail from this month. The service operates once a week and is expected to transport more than 20,000 vehicles a year, avoiding 2,400 truck trips and thus reducing CO2 emissions by 43%.

Until now, “cars produced in Martorell were transported by train to Salobral (Madrid) and then distributed from there by trucks to various dealers,” the company explains in a statement, adding that they will now be shipped directly to Palmela. transported by truck for the last time to a warehouse in Azambuja.

On the way back, the convoy will deliver the cars produced in Palmela to the port of Barcelona, ​​from where they will be delivered by road to various regions of Spain, southern France and by sea to other destinations in the Mediterranean.

Steiner also added that the project is part of the “One Production” strategy of the Volkswagen Group plants in the Iberian Peninsula, the main goal of which is to optimize resources, create synergies in three production centers and increase efficiency.
