The mayor of the Brazilian city of São Paulo Bruno Covas died this Sunday at the age of 41 from cancer.

According to a Syrian-Lebanese hospital, Bruno Covas was hospitalized in serious condition on May 3 last year for cancer treatment. The diagnosis was made at the end of 2019, and the day before, the mayor announced that he was going to be treated for the disease.

“In recent months, life has presented me with enormous problems. I tried to confront them with faith, head held high and with great determination, ”Covas wrote in a note published at the time.

Neto de Mario Covas, former governor of São Paulo, Bruno Covas, 41, resumed chemotherapy sessions last February and was again hospitalized for several days due to a liver tumor, but remained in office.

A member of the Brazilian Social Democratic Party (PSDB), Bruno Covas became mayor of the city of São Paulo in April 2018, replacing João Doria, who left office and was elected governor of the state of São Paulo.

Protected restrictive measures

Last June, Covas tested positive for the new coronavirus, a disease he overcame without any major problems.

He defended social exclusion measures against covid-19, for which he was criticized by Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who last year blamed the rise in the number of cases and deaths caused by COVID-19 on governors and mayors who imposed social exclusion measures. “This bill is to be sent to the governors. Ask Mr. Joao Doria [governador do estado de São Paulo], Mr Covas [autarca]“Why did they take restrictive measures and people keep dying,” he said at the time.

The news of the death of Bruno Covas was commented on and complained on social media by several personalities, including former Brazilian presidents Lula da Silva, Dilma Rousseff and Michelle Temer.
