Russia denies Kyiv attack and blames Ukrainian air defense

“There were no shelling in Kyiv. All the destruction in the city reported by the Kyiv authorities is a consequence of the fall of foreign and Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile systems installed in residential areas of the Ukrainian capital, ”said Igor Konashenkov, spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry.

Ukraine on Wednesday accused Moscow of firing missiles at Kyiv, killing three people, injuring six and damaging infrastructure, leading to new power outages in several cities.

Local authorities in several regions of Ukraine reported numerous attacks, indicating a coordinated wave of Russian forces that mainly targeted critical infrastructure, namely energy, as well as residential buildings.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that “one of the capital’s infrastructure facilities was damaged” and that there were “several more explosions in different areas” of the city, which also disrupted the water supply.

Power outages were recorded in different parts of Kyiv, Kharkov, Lvov and the southern region of Odessa.

The attack comes hours after Ukrainian authorities reported that a rocket had been fired at night that destroyed a maternity ward at a hospital in southern Ukraine, killing a two-day-old baby.

The situation was even more serious in the city of Kherson (south), from which Russia withdrew almost two weeks ago after several months of occupation, where power and water lines were cut off.

Many doctors in the city had to work without light, could not use elevators to transport patients to operating rooms, and worked with headlights, cell phone flashlights, and flashlights.

According to the Ukrainian operator Energoatom, the attacks led to the disconnection of three Ukrainian nuclear power plants from the power grid, which, however, have already started working again, leading to serious power outages.

Russia has been attacking power grids and other vital installations on Ukrainian soil for weeks now with rockets and “unmanned aerial vehicles” (UAVs), apparently to weaponize the cold and darkness of winter against Ukraine.

The war in Ukraine, triggered by the Russian military offensive that began on February 24, plunged Europe into the most serious security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).

According to the UN, the conflict has generated more than six million internally displaced persons (people who were forced to leave their usual place of residence but who remained in the country).

It has also generated over 7.8 million refugees who are mostly in European countries.
