The young Brazilian, despite a strong presence on social media, considers the current political debate to be aggressive and intolerant to such an extent that most of them (83%) do not comment on the topic on their profiles. For 59% of them, the fear of being convicted, revoked or aggressive justifies the choice of silence. Data taken from a survey conducted by Ipec (formerly Ibope) of 1008 young people aged 16 to 34 between September 18-21 and presented to the press this Wednesday (3). The voting track represents 58 million votes.

According to the study, which aimed to reveal the perception of the political and social problems of this public, the fight against hunger and poverty, job creation and the preservation of the environment are social values ​​that are considered the most important today and can be among the main factors to determine. youth vote in the 2022 presidential election.

Despite the abandonment of public debate on social media, research shows that most young people are willing to participate in political life. In the 16-18 age group, where voting is not compulsory, 82% of those surveyed said they would withdraw their voter registration card in order to vote in the next election. When asked why, 29% answered that this was required by an alarming political moment; 28% want to exercise their right to vote, and 25% say that young people should participate in political life. This contingent is about 5 million votes.

The study was commissioned by the global civil movement Avaaz and the Tide Setubal Foundation. “Young Brazilians want to vote and participate in politics, but the culture of rejection and the aggressive debate that permeates the political ecosystem is pushing them away. If we do not bring young people back to the center of political debate, we risk losing them, either through radicalization or apathy, ”says Marcio Black, coordinator of the Democracy and Active Citizenship Program at the Tida Setubal Foundation.

For Julia Moreira, Socialist Youth Coordinator at PDT-MG, the survey serves as a warning as it points to the need for parties to open better to welcome young people. “You have to think about the participation of young people in politics and the electoral process, giving them access to them, which is a challenge for all of us,” she says. “Young people feel represented when they find representatives who share their ideas and, more importantly, when they manage to become part of these transformational movements,” he adds.
