According to the German daily Süddeutsche Zeitung and the public television channels NDR and WDR, cited by the Spanish news agency Efe, Danish services helped the US National Security Agency (NSA) to wiretap the cell phones of Merkel and the then foreign minister. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, current president of Germany.

The wiretapping scandal occurred in 2013 and affected relations between two great transatlantic allies, Berlin and Washington.

Merkel has repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with the then US President, Democrat Barack Obama, considering it “unacceptable espionage among friends.”

Several investigative journalism has revealed that the NSA has spied on several European leaders and the European Central Bank since the 1990s.

According to released information, Denmark was aware of the content of these events and may have cooperated with the United States in their implementation.

According to German media reports, the issue puts Denmark in a double position as a neighbor of Germany and a partner of the European Union (EU).

Denmark’s cooperation with the NSA made it possible to connect not only to Merkel’s phone, but also to the phones of other leaders of the Nordic countries, such as Sweden and Norway.
