Justin Miller, a lawyer for the Brooks family, told CNN Ana Cabrera on Sunday that the first comments of a police officer after Rayshard Brooks’ fatal shooting “were very disturbing.”
Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard told CNN, “We really had the opportunity to hear the officer’s first statement after the shooting took place. And what the officer said was not that his life was safe. What was his statement, he said, ‘I got him.'”
Miller said that he and his family knew about the statement “I got it”.
It really bothered me, my partner Chris, and Tamika, his widow. Very disturbing, “Miller said.
Miller also discussed the autopsy, saying that they had not seen the report, but they knew a number of things that would be in it.
“We know he was shot twice in the back. Once on his back and once in his ass and the shot finally killed him,” Miller said.
Regarding the indictment, Miller said “this is a little different from what the murder of George Floyd said because it was still a murder, but the legality, they fell differently when there was a fight and a taser and then the person who escaped was killed.”
As for what Miller expected from the accusation, he said “it might not be a murder.”
“That’s a very difficult thing to fill in,” Miller said. “You know, you only see all the other cases that are a little clearer and, you know, are as deadly as clients, and they are not charged with murder.”
Miller did say it was good people and the city leaders took steps “to reduce the problem.”
“But that’s not justice, and we don’t really think it can be justice because a man’s life is taken, children lose a father, and a wife loses a husband.”
