Portuguese arrested for fatal hit-and-run in Spain handed over to National Police

A Portuguese citizen was arrested a few dozen kilometers from the crash site along with two children who allegedly tried to escape after the incident, which is believed to have been deliberate, according to various Spanish media.

Hurrying out of the car, the father and two sons were eventually intercepted by the Civil Guard, while the fourth passenger of the car, the driver’s nephew, managed to escape and is wanted in the area.

The attack took place around 2 am when two families were celebrating a gypsy wedding at the El Rancho restaurant on Avenida de la Constitución.

According to the first investigations by the police, several people who were not invited and who had disagreements with some of the participants broke into the place, causing a fight.

During the struggle, under circumstances that are being investigated, a car with four passengers ran over more than a dozen people.

Four people were killed, four were seriously injured, two were moderately injured and two others were slightly injured, police sources and the Community of Emergency 112 Madrid, which sent several teams to the scene, said.

The dead are a 66-year-old woman and three men aged 68, 37 and 17, all Spaniards.

According to Spanish press reports, several thousand euro banknotes were found in the car under the driver’s seat.

When found, the vehicle suspected of being involved in the hit-and-run had several bloodstains and was badly damaged.
