Despite the positive performance, the Portuguese car market continues to show lower performance compared to the same period in 2019.

The Portuguese car market is recovering its pace since April this year, enough to grow 27.3% over the first six months of 2020, with a total of 99,322 registered vehicles. However, it is also necessary to make a comparison with the same period in 2019, because this is a time when Covid-19 did not exist yet, and therefore, it is a good indicator for understanding whether the effects of the pandemic continue to affect the store. The answer is yes. According to the Automobile Association of Portugal (ACAP), the decline was -34.1%.

Limiting the numbers to the passenger car market only, 18,936 vehicles were registered in Portugal in June 2021. These numbers represent an increase of 71% over 2020, but a decrease of -25.2% over 2019. Overall, 81,445 units recorded for the first half of 2021 represent an increase of 25.6% over 2020, however, this also results in a negative deviation of -36.7% if we look at the figures for the same period in 2019 year.
