BUTUS officials are investigating the disappearance of a $ 5,800 (€ 4,899) bottle of whiskey donated two years ago by the Japanese government to former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

According to The keeperThe US State Department did not locate the proposal and launched an investigation as part of an annual investigation into gifts given by foreign leaders and governments to government officials.

“The agency is investigating the case and conducting an inquiry,” the newspaper said in official documents.

These proposals, the publication emphasizes, must be registered and placed in a file. Officials who receive gifts of significant value may deliver them to the National Archives or other government agency, or may purchase them for personal use by refunding the cost to the Treasury Department.

The $ 5,800 bottle of Japanese whiskey was offered by Pompeo in June 2019 when he visited the country at the G20 summit, which was also attended by former President Donald Trump. However, unlike what happened with the other proposals, no information was found about the whereabouts of the bottle.

Representatives for Mike Pompeo did not respond to requests for comment from the Guardian.
