When, two days after Jair Bolsonaro’s actions on 7 September, former President Michel Temer was summoned to Brasilia, he played a leading role in statements in which the President softened the bellicose speech and said that the threats and challenges made to the stands were due to “ hot moments ”, and this would strictly comply with the requirements of the Federal Constitution, as if the adults in the room finally paid attention to the situation and put things in order in the house.

Fear can be loved or hated. However, he must be respected. He is one of those who know the country’s political behind-the-scenes best. With his distinctive way of speaking and acting, he has the knowledge to act in the strengthening or collapse of any government. Therefore, it is better to have him as an ally than an adversary.

With the experience gained over decades of acting, Temer assures that there is no atmosphere for a coup. This Bolsonaro may even raise the tone, as he has systematically done, but he will find no reason to go beyond that as Brazilian democracy is firmly entrenched.

On the other hand, at the moment he advises to refrain from any attempts to impeach Bolsonar. In this case, because the elections are very close and this will cause colossal confusion in the country, therefore, it is most reasonable to wait for the results of the polls, because, as the Federal Constitution preaches, power comes from the people.

Thus, Temer’s statements published on the following pages of the Diary show that, in one way or another, institutions are functioning. That which is ruled by the president, the legislature makes laws, and the judiciary takes care of their implementation.

However, it’s time for everyone to take on their role. Work in your line of business. Perform functions as best you can. This is the only way to overcome the serious damage caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. This crisis is already serious enough; other countries do not need it.
