Police officers fatally fired at an Alabama motel; two in custody

A police officer was shot dead late Tuesday while responding to a call at a motel in Alabama, the local news agency reported.

He was identified as Police Sergeant Moody. Stephen Williams, 23, who has spent three years in the department, reports the news agency. He was shot just before 9:30 at night. and taken by ambulance to the hospital, AL.com reports.

“The loss is a loss for all of Alabama,” Jay E. Town, the US attorney for the northern district of Alabama, said in a statement. “This serves as a heartbreaking reminder faced by law enforcement every day.”

“He is just a good man, a good person, happy to be around,” Moody Police Chief Thomas Hunt told AL.com.

News outlets reported a possible standoff at a motel with a large police presence, and two suspects had been arrested.

The video from the scene shows dozens of law enforcement vehicles and medical helicopters at a Super 8 motel. ABC 33/40 reports that cameras in nearby businesses capture audio from what sounds like a barrage of gunfire.

Moody is a city on St. Clair County, about 35 kilometers east of Birmingham.

Amar Fouda told AL.com that he heard a lot of noise from the next room. “I hear like an AK-47,” he said. Fouda said she ran to the bathroom and hid in the bathtub.
