The PlayStation 5 was originally launched in November 2020. All this happened in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, in a world that was suffering from an unprecedented shortage of components.

PlayStation 5 sold 20 million units

After this time, Sony officially confirms that the PlayStation 5 has reached a new sales milestone, which is always good to point out. For GamesIndustry, this shows that the console has already reached 20 million units sold.

This is a console with a much higher demand than the available supply. This means that if it were not for the lack of components, this goal of 20 million units sold would have been reached long ago.

“We are pleased to announce that Sony Interactive Entertainment has sold over 20 million PlayStation 5 consoles worldwide,” said Veronica Rogers, Senior Vice President of Global Sales and Commercial Operations, Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Sony promises to increase PS5 production in 2022

Sony plans to significantly increase production through the end of 2022. So they “worked around the clock to make sure the PlayStation 5 was available to anyone who wanted it.”

It took 82 minutes to sell 80,000 consoles to see what sales of the PS5 could be without limits. In comparison, it took the PlayStation 4 nine days to achieve comparable results.

Sony’s goal is for the PlayStation 5 to outperform the PS4 by its fourth year. You will have to walk a lot for this to happen at the time the brand wants.
