The first project to inject green hydrogen into the gas network in Portugal – the Green Pipeline Project – was presented this Friday by GGND (Galp Gás Natural Distribuição).

This pioneering project in Portugal will reach 80 consumers in the residential, tertiary and industrial sectors. Know which city has been chosen.

Buyers will receive a mixture of natural gas and hydrogen.

GGND, owner of nine regional gas distribution companies in Portugal and a leader in its sector, today presented at Seixal Portugal's first green hydrogen injection project, the Green Pipeline project.

As a starting point, this network will reach 80 consumers who will be able to receive a mixture of natural gas and hydrogen from January 2022, which will be an important step in the transition to energy in Portugal.

The Green Pipeline project involves several partners, from design to construction, bringing together contributions from academia, public and private institutions. Green hydrogen, a 100% renewable fuel, will be produced in the Seixal Industrial Park through a partnership between GGND and the Portuguese company Gestene.

According to a statement to Pplware, during the initial phase of the project, 2% of hydrogen will be injected into the natural gas network, gradually increasing this percentage to a maximum of 20% over 2 years.

Green hydrogen is 100% renewable fuel. It is produced by electrolysis of water, which is the separation of hydrogen and oxygen molecules using an electrolyzer powered by renewable electricity.

Hydrogen can replace natural gas in the various applications in which it is used today, highlighting its potential for industrial, mobility or building use, making a major contribution to decarbonizing the fact that only water is released to the atmosphere after use. hydrogen.
