The latest release from Obsidian Entertainment, the studio behind the classic Fallout: New Vegas, Repentance shows that the manufacturer is still on the lookout for new experiences, like the great Grounded, and that it manages to release great games with original and charming offerings.

With Pentiment, the studio manages to combine compelling storytelling with accessible game mechanics and an art direction that not only fits perfectly into both, but captivates the player from the first moment.

In the game, the player controls the traveling artist Andreas Mahler as he travels through Tassing, a fictional city in the Holy Roman Empire, during the height of the Middle Ages. Her job is to copy manuscripts at a local monastery, but Mahler soon becomes involved in a series of mysteries that need to be solved.

Medieval artwork

The game reproduces the art style of the Middle Ages, both in the character lines and in the text that plays a central role in the game: there is no dubbing in Pentiment, but each character’s lines, in blocks of text, have different fonts and spelling that quickly convey the personality of the subject, be it, for example, a poor peasant or a cultured priest. And all this is in Portuguese, which is very important in such a game.

The plot unfolds in three acts, in which it is necessary to investigate the murders and find out who the culprits are. As the time approaches to solve the crime, Mahler needs to maintain his routine while doing so, which ultimately limits everything the player can do (and is a great incentive for a new game). At the end of each case, it is necessary to point out the culprit, with the clues that the player has been able to decipher, and accept the consequences, regardless of whether the accused is the real criminal or not.

Each arc takes place in a different year, with very long time jumps in between, allowing you to see the changes in the city caused many times over by your decisions. People also grow, age and die. The city is alive and serves as the second protagonist.

Pentiment is a must-have game for point-and-click adventurers. Its style and pace may not be for every type of player, but honestly every player should try it.

Pentiment is available for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The game is included in the Game Pass catalog.
