The PKP denounced this Monday the “clear commitment of the Portuguese government” to support Finland’s and Sweden’s NATO candidacy, arguing that the accession of the two countries “represents a serious escalation of tension” in Europe.

“PCP deplores the Portuguese Government’s clear commitment to this new expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the escalation of the confrontation, which is a clear expression of subordination to the interests of the United States of America (USA),” supported PCP in a statement.

The party advocates that since Portugal’s integration into NATO in July 1949, the alliance should be used to “support the fascist dictatorship” and “threaten the young Portuguese democracy” on 25 April.

“The announced expansion of NATO at the expense of Finland and Sweden not only does not bring security, but also represents a serious escalation of tensions in Europe and at the international level,” the PKP adds.

If implemented, the accession of Helsinki and Stockholm would represent a “qualitative leap” in the presence of “a military-political bloc on the borders of the Russian Federation, one of the factors in the aggravation of the situation in Europe and the current war in Ukraine.” “, guarantee the communists.

The PKP considers that the accession of the two Scandinavian countries to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is proceeding “hurriedly”. and not give the peoples of these countries the opportunity to comment on the decision, with such alarming consequences for themselves” and for other European countries.

The party also accuses NATO of promoting “hostile forces” against Russia, “including overtly fascist forces that idolized Nazi collaborators during World War II.”

Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson announced today that the country will apply for NATO membership, ending a 200-year policy of neutrality. On Sunday, Finnish President Sauli Niinistö announced his country’s intention to join the alliance.

Stockholm and Helsinki have already announced their intention to join NATO in the wake of Russia’s February 24 invasion of Ukraine, heightening those countries’ fears that Moscow might intend to extend its military offensive to other countries.
