Patriot tries to contain Bolsonaro split with new convention

Ten days after the Patriot split became public, party president Adilson Barroso called a new national convention the following Monday, 14 in an attempt to thwart a scuffle to make Jair Bolsonaro’s accession impossible. The President of the Republic is negotiating to join Patriota to run for re-election in 2022, but changes to the party’s charter to allow his allies to control the party’s catalogs are subject to legal action.

A notice to convene another party congress “in virtual and / or personal mode” was published this Friday, 11, with the agenda “proposal to join national party political interests”, adapt and change the internal charter and create a Political Council, among other things …

The first congress of the Patriot, which contributed to the amendment of the charter and the composition of the party summit, was held on the 31st in Barrinha, in the interior of São Paulo. On this occasion, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, son of the President, announced his affiliation with the Patriot.

The changes in direction of the party, with some forced layoffs, were categorized as “coup” and “interference” by a wing of the party, which included Vice President Ovasco Resende and Secretary General Horselino Braga.

Dissidents, many of whom come from the old PRP, which has teamed up with Patriota, have turned to the High Electoral Court (TSE) in an attempt to stop changes that were deemed irregular. Minister Edson Facin, vice president of TSE, seeing the charges as “high gravity,” said the case should be referred to general justice.

The notary office refused to keep the minutes

The first notary office of the Federal District refused to register the minutes of the convention on the 31st, the state said. In a note released on Thursday 10, the roster provided a list of nine demands for the party to resolve the situation and demanded documents proving a qualified quorum at that meeting.

Warned that a legal dispute could take some time and ultimately prevent Bolsonaro from joining Patriota, Barroso then opted to convene a new convention, canceling the previous meeting.

The president’s affiliation does not need to be checked in the directory, as it was before. But Barroso wanted to make a political gesture. “All this was irregular, so much so that he could not register the protocol of the congress in the registry office,” said Horselino Braga. “I expected this split, but I am trying to calm down my fellow believers. It is suicide not to accept this blessing that God gives us and to refuse Bolsonar from the party. He is our salvation. “
