Bobcat Fire moves into the forest and far from homes in Southern California.

Southern California residents are nervously watching the Bobcat Fire, which burns an estimated 24,000 acres in the Angeles National Forest about 25 miles northeast of Los Angeles, triggering evacuation warnings in a number of densely populated suburbs south of the fire, including the city of Pasadena. …

The fire, which started on Sunday, is now 6 percent localized, but is spreading rapidly, fueled by extremely dry vegetation in areas where “there have been almost no fires,” according to the US Forest Service. On Friday morning, the fire moved northeast, further into the forest and further from the foothill settlements.

“The wind was very light,” said George Klass, an emergency volunteer from Arcadia. Moderate winds are good for firefighters, he said, but left smoke over the Los Angeles area.

According to the Forest Service, burning slowed slightly towards the east, where Ranch2 Fire started burning last month, spreading over more than 4,000 acres.

Other communities on alert include Monrovia, Arcadia, Bradbury, Sierra Madre, Altadena and Duarte. No evacuation orders were issued in these communities.

The cause of the Bobcat fire is being investigated. According to Mr. Klass, it will likely not be fully contained until mid-October.

The report was provided Davey Alba, Tim Arango, Mike Baker, Keith Conger, Richard Fosse, Marie Fazio, Christopher Flavel, Thomas Fuller, Jack Healy, Julia McDonnell Nieto del Rio, Brian Pitch, John Schwartz and Alan Juhas…
