A New York City tourist in Hawaii was arrested for violating a state restraint order after sharing his photos on the beach on Instagram, officials said.
Tariq Peters, 23, was arrested after local residents alerted Hawaii authorities about seeing the pictures.
The staff at the hotel where Peters stayed also testified to authorities that he had left his room and courtyard since arriving in Oahu on Monday.
“The day he arrived, he left his hotel room and toured many places using public transportation,” a press release from the state’s COVID-19 information center said.
Peters posted several photos of himself while he was wandering around Waikiki, going to the beach with the surfboard and sunbathing, the release said.
State Attorney General special agents arrested him Friday for violating a provision for self-incarceration and a “dubious misrepresentation of authority” for travelers to Hawaii for 14 days.

Peters is being held on $ 4,000 bail. A local man was with Peters when he was taken into custody, pending charges against the man.
It is unclear whether Peters has legal representation.
“We appreciate the help of local people who have been found to have violated our Emergency Regulations on various social media sites and report them to appropriate authorities,” said Attorney General Clare Connors.
In April, the Hawaii Department of Transportation said travelers coming to Hawaii must sign a document admitting to self-incrimination and violating the rule is a criminal offense, which could result in a $ 5,000 fine and / or a year in prison.
