Negosios learned that Media9Par, owned by Angolan businessman N’Gun Tini, is in talks to acquire Jornal Económico and the weekly newspaper Novo. The agreements seem to be closed in the coming days.

Media9Par is the media subsidiary of the Emerald Group and will also merge Forbes Portugal and Forbes Lusófona, whose publishing rights are already owned by the group.

The purchase of the two newspapers, until now owned by Megafin and Lapanews respectively, is part of a strategy developed by N’Gunu Tiny to create a leading Portuguese-language media group.

In this sense, both newspapers will undergo a repositioning aimed at establishing themselves in the Portuguese-speaking world, with a particular focus on topics such as climate change and energy, digitalization and social innovation.

In the case of Novo, assurances were given that it would maintain a liberal editorial line, opening the paper to civil society.

The emergence of Media9Par was reported in early June. At the time, Raul Bragança Neto, director of the Emerald Group, explained the purpose of this subsidiary. “We will explore the relationship between economics, business and politics with the aim of promoting and highlighting the leaders and companies that are transforming the Portuguese-speaking space by structuring topics such as climate change and energy, digital transformation and social innovation.” .

In addition to Media9Par, the 40% minority stake in Polígrafo, which the Emerald Group has held since 2018, will remain from 2018, as well as another 40% stake in Viral, a project launched in 2021 at the height of the pandemic to help fight media misinformation .

N’Gunu Olivio Noronha Tini, born in 1977, holds a law degree from the University of Nova de Lisboa and is a Research Fellow at the London School of Economics (LSE). He started his career at the law firm of Carlos Feijo in Luanda, then moved to London, where he was co-founder and chairman of financial services company Eaglestone until 2013. In addition, he has served as CEO of Banco Postal. and director of De Beers Angola.

Established in 2009, the Emerald Group, headquartered in the Dubai International Financial Center, is a wholly owned entrepreneur-owned investment holding company focused on the financial and energy sectors, as well as impact investing and social innovation.
