PETA, an animal rights non-governmental organization (NGO), has asked Benfica to stop using eagles in pre-game ceremonies at the Estadio da Luz stadium.

In return, the institution, led by Dan Matthews, is offering an eagle disguise that can be worn by one person.

“Eagles have no place in sporting events. In the wild, these magnificent birds roam over vast areas, spending most of their time above trees, flying freely and hunting in wide areas. Those who are used only for demonstration are denied the opportunity to engage in their natural behavior, leading to extreme frustration and stress,” wrote PETA Vice President Mimi Behechi in a letter sent in red.

“If you agree to take the birds to the reserve, PETA will cover the cost and replace them with a fabulous eagle costume that Benfica fans will love. Please join other clubs that show compassion for animals by promising not to use live animals as pets.”

On social media, PETA wrote a simple message identifying Benfica: “Eagles just don’t belong at sporting events.”
