She noted that there is a legitimate demand for the participation of all sectors of society in the political space, and with evangelicals, for example, not otherwise, also because there are a large number of believers among the Brazilian population. Although the desire to participate is considered legitimate, she stressed that the state is secular and should be treated as such.

“We are a secular state, and in a secular state there is a state policy for all sectors of society. When you think about public policy, you do it for those who believe, for those who don’t believe, for those who are evangelical, for those who are Catholic, for those who have an African denominational faith. (…) God has no respect (affection) for people. The secular state also does not respect individuals.”

Marina, who attends the Assembly of God, also denied claims that Lula intends to close churches, mindful that the PT presidential candidate signed a pledge in this sense in order to reassure the faithful, although it was never planned to close religious temples, as the president’s supporters say Jair Bolsonaro (PL), who is seeking re-election.

“Now what demystifies this lie and slander the most is that if we were to do a poll how many times the same people who are now saying that the President Lula going to close the church, these are the ones who went to the palace to pray with the president, meet the president and sanction the gospel day, the law of religious freedom. And, obviously, our religious freedom for all people is protected most of all by our Constitution“.

“We never thought that we would have to fight for something already consolidated”

In an interview, the elected federal deputy, who ran for president three times – most recently in 2018 – said that democracy is under threat and that it must be preserved and the right to difference protected.

“This country is going through a situation that we never thought could happen after we won our democracy. Today we must fight for what, as we have already imagined, has been consolidated. Suddenly Bolsonaro comes and wants to deprive the Brazilian people of the ability to sovereignly elect their representatives.”

He added: “We have learned our lesson. When democracy is under threat, we need everyone to go through this transition. When it is mothballed, we will continue the conversation. We need everything. We want a movement of reconciliation. From Brazil with you. From Brazil with other people. With me from Brazil.

“The interview (Bolsonaro) looked like a speech about defeat”

As for the former minister, the President of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro (PL), is “in despair” and therefore claims to have been harmed in radio advertisements, less than 1% of the total.

“We never severed our personal connection. But due to political differences, we were separated. On September 11, we had a long personal conversation. A personal conversation is a personal conversation. But I can say that it was such a good personal conversation that it spawned a public conversation in which he committed himself to the most advanced environmental policy in Latin America for a sustainable development project that fights inequality, strengthens democracy and protects the natural foundations of our development. ”
