Governor Andrew Cuomo’s push to make professional sports run again in New York took a step forward on Sunday.

Cuomo said during a press conference at the Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh that on Sunday, professional sports leagues could start holding training camps in New York, as the league worked on their plans to continue playing amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“Starting today, all New York professional sports leagues will be able to start training camps,” Cuomo said. “I believe a sport that can return without anyone in the stadium, without anyone in the arena, do it! Do it! Do the economy if you can. We want you to wake up. We want people to be able to watch sports as far as people are still at home. It gives people something to do. This is back to normal. So we work and encourage all sports teams to start their training camp as soon as possible, and we will work with them to ensure that can happen. “

On Friday, the Yankees and Mets are expected to continue spring training at their respective locations in Florida.

Several NBA teams have reopened their training facilities when the league plans to return to Orlando, but the Knicks and Nets have not been able to do so until now. Knicks players have spread across North America since the league was suspended from playing in March.

NHL is planning a 24-team playoff for this summer.
