The world is clearly in a state of transition. It is true that the number of people infected has risen sharply, but the number of hospitalized patients and deaths was much lower compared to last year over the same period.

Cyprus recently identified Deltacron, a new variant that mixes Delta with Ómicron.

Deltacron has the genetic signature of Omicron, but the genome of the Delta variant

To complicate the pandemic, Cyprus discovered a new variant, which they named Deltacron, which is a mixture of Delta and Ómicron. According to what TSF mentions, only 25 cases are known so far, and all of them are in Cyprus. Cypriot experts argue that this is a new option that combines the features of the other two most common.

Deltacron has the genetic signature of Omicron, but the genome of the Delta variant. The reported cases are more common among those hospitalized with COVID-19 than among those infected with milder forms of the disease.

Experts have little information yet about this new option and admit it is too early to say if there is cause for concern about this COVID-19 virus mix. However, all indications are that Deltacron may even disappear in the face of the advancement of the most infectious strain, Omicron.

Since the start of the pandemic, COVID-19 has caused 5,478,486 deaths worldwide, according to the latest report from Agence France-Presse.

In Portugal, since March 2020, 19,113 people have died and 1,639,846 cases of infection have been reported, according to the latest update from the General Directorate of Health.

Respiratory disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, discovered at the end of 2019 in China. A new variant, Ómicron, which the World Health Organization (WHO) considers alarming and highly infectious, has been reported since November in at least 110 countries, with Portugal being the dominant one.
