New Ray-Ban Stories Smart Glasses Raise Privacy Concerns

Facebook’s top privacy regulator in Europe raised concerns about the couple Ray-Ban smart sunglasses that the tech giant started selling. The glasses have a front camera with which you can take pictures and shoot short videos.

The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) said on Friday that it requires Facebook to display a compliant LED indicator that lights up when a user records a video as an effective way to alert other people who have been recorded or photographed. Garante, the data protection authority in Italy, has also raised concerns about user privacy.

The Facebook smart glasses, created in collaboration with the manufacturer Ray-Ban, allow users to listen to music, make calls, take short photos and videos, and post them to Facebook services. In terms of design, the glasses will be available in 20 different combinations and will be sold at Ray-ban’s online store and retail stores in six countries: the US, Australia, Canada, Ireland, Italy and the UK. “In the case of glasses, there is a small indicator that lights up when recording starts. DPC or Garante have not proven that Facebook ran tests to make sure the LED is an effective method of alerting others, ”says DPC.

It is not disclosed at this time whether Facebook has contacted any European regulator to clarify these privacy issues when using Ray-Ban Stories. But Alex Himel, vice president of augmented reality at Facebook Reality Labs, pointed out that Facebook consulted with “various privacy groups” on development.
